Solar Powered Cars – NO POLLUTION!!
Hello! Sylvia here:)
As we know, there is a very high amount of energy and waste involved in the production of conventionalĀ cars. People extract raw materials and transport them to factories. Do you know that creating just a single car can cause tonnes of waste, litres of crude oil dumped into the ocean and pollutes the atmosphere. Driving and disposing of the car further pollutes 1.1 billion cubic metres of air and adds 18.4 kilograms of abrasive waste.
However, the Energy Challenge, a competition in Australia’s New South Wales, showed that solar cars do rather poorly in GGI, greenhouse gas index, when compared to other vehicles. Hence there is no pollution caused in the production of solar cars!
Conventional cars generate 3 major pollutants: hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. Cars generate these pollutants because of the fuel combustion process, and from under the hood and throughout the fuel system when heat causes fuel evaporation. Evaporative emissions occur at these times:
- When outside temperatures on hot, sunny days cause a car’s fuel to evaporate
- When the hot engine and exhaust system of a running car cause the fuel to become heated
- When the car is shut off and remains hot enough to cause fuel to evaporate
- During refueling, when gasoline vapours escape into the air from the gas tank and the nozzle
Solar energy car is an electric vehicle powered by solar energy obtained from solar panel on the surface of the car. On the solar opanel, there are solar cells called Photovoltaic cells which convert the solar energy into electrical energy. Solar car have many benefits, most importantly, there is NO EMISSION OF HARMFUL GASES. Hence, there is NO AIR POLLUTION.
If there are more solar powered cars on the road, then there should be a corresponding decrease in the level of pollution, especially in heavily populated areas of our large cities. As a result, everyone can live healthily as there will be less air pollution!
